Further Research

For further research I looked at some other magazines. I studied their use of colour and font. On the front of each cover I saw how they had names of people that would feature in their magazine and I decided to use that for my front cover also. Looking at these magazines and futher researching front covers, it has helped me with more ideas for my front cover.

Changes To Colour Scheme

Initially my colour scheme was black, red and white but I changed the white to silver. As It seems more prestige and exclusive. It makes it look more edgy and also expensive. I feel that the colour silver seems more urban than white as it is quite boring.

Chosen Masthead

After asking audience feedback I have decided to go with the masthead with the silver writing. The feedback I have gotten is that the red masthead overpowered my page and gave it more of a horror theme. Also by also making my masthead red, they felt as though my front cover was too overwhelming.

Changes Made

Changes made: I have changed my initial idea of a female artist on her own to an all girl group. The reason I have done this is because there are not many girl groups of the r'n'b and hip hop genre out there. I feel as though they can still relate to my target audience and also its sets them apart. I feel as though this is the better decision and the pictures came out great of my new girl group I am creating called, R.O.D.

Picking my front cover

My first step to creating my front cover was picking my background. I decided to have this as my background. The reason I chose this picture is because I really like the positioning of the girls and their indvidual poses and positioning. I feel as though this picture will really stand out on the shelves as it is relateable and strong. Each girl has their individual style and personality which shines through in this picture. I also added boarders to my front cover so that I wouldn't go over.

Secondly, I added my magazine name where I decided my font as apart of my research. I decided to add a barcode which I feel helps it to look more professional and also a blackberry barcode so my target audience could interact using their phones as blackberry's are very popular. I decided on that positioning as I feel it balances out.

Case Studies

Flavour Magazine

On the front cover of the magazine you are automatically struck by the magazine name “Flavour” as it is written in capitals in bold lettering, with a bold colour written on a black background which makes the name stand out even more. You can tell that it is a hip hop magazine by the singer on the front cover and the way the singer and cover looks edgy and cool. The writing “The crazy, sexy, cool issue” intrigues the reading, letting them know that there is some goof to expect inside of this issue. The colours the writing is in are white and pink which are very soft, feminine colours relating to the female singer ‘Alexandra Burke’ who is on the cover. They also have the magazine’s website on the cover which is great advertisement and a short list of other artists who will also be in this issue of “Flavour” magazine which again intrigues and larger number of people who are interested in one of those following artists.

The colours from the cover page continue as you can still see hints of pink. The way she is dressed shows that she’s trendy and edgy which the overall atmosphere of this magazine is. The writing is quite small and in three columns with sectioned paragraphs. The background is white so that you can see the writing more clearly. The magazine name is left bottom of the page as well as the page number. The overall magazine flows very well as the colour scheme remains the same and you get a hip hop vibe from the images and clothing they are dressed in.

V Magazine

The front cover of V Magazine is in black and white. The only colour comes from the V sign which automatically draws attention and clarifies what magazine it is. The picture is of Justin Bieber who is a big influence in the music industry is the only picture on the magazine which means the magazine is featuring on him. He is wearing an edgy, modern cut out top which matches the edgy feeling of this magazine. The cover lines are down the left side of the magazine including names of other celebrities that are possibly featured in this magazine. The main cover line is in bold and at the right bottom side of the page. It says “Pop’s crown prince turns 18!” which indicates that some of the article in the magazine will focus on his birthday. The issue number is also on the front cover of this magazine.

The double page spread consists of an article talking about Justin Bieber’s previous success and then it is followed by a question and answer interview. There are two images of him wearing different clothes and posing differently. They are quite simple and also in black and white. On the first page in the double page spread there is a quote from Justin and the feature article and interview starts on the second page. There is no background and they seem quite dull however comes across as professional. It focuses only on Justin. His clothes are stylish and cool which relates to the magazine type.

Audience Feedback Of Proposal

Audience Feedback:

Likes: They liked the black, white and red colour scheme I had chosen. They felt as if it was unisex and catered to everyone. They also liked my idea by adding gossip instead of it only being about music. They agree that it sets its apart from other magazines and is a good idea.

Dislikes: They disliked the name of my magazine as they felt that it wasnt urban enough. My previous name was "Melody" however they suggested that I change it to something that sounds more urban and went with the Hip hop and r'n'b genre more.

Changes I made from feedback: I thought about what they disliked which was the name and changed it from "Melody" to "Da Beat" which is more urban and goes with my genre a bit more. The word "Da" meaning "the" is commonly used by my target audience which makes it relateableto them. Also hip hop and r'n'b music is all about the beat forming my magazine name.
